The morphogenetic and structural characteristics, coupled to forage production of Tanzania grass with nitrogen (N) doses during the seasons of the year, at intermittent grazing, were analyzed. The experimental design consisted of a totally randomized block with split plots and four replications. The plots comprised 0, 150, 300 and 450 kg ha-1 N levels, whereas the sub-plots were the seasons. Urea was applied three times on the pasture and had a positive effect on the rates of leaf elongation and emergence and on the number of live leaves of Tanzania grass in the spring and summer. High nitrogen fertilization associated with shorter grazing intervals triggered a higher percentage of leaf blades in the management of Tanzania grass under rotational stocking... |

Lettuce is one of the leading vegetables in Brazil. However, studies concerning its fertilization for the Northeastern region of the country are still scarce. This work was carried out to evaluate the effects of mineral Nitrogen supply and organic fertilization on the production and nitrate accumulation in lettuce, cultivar Elba, in the semi-arid zone of Paraíba, Brazil. A randomized block design, with four replications, was used to test five doses of cattle manure (30; 60; 90; 120, and 150 t ha-1), five doses of N supplied as urea (30; 60; 90; 120, and 150 kg ha-1), and a control without fertilization. Along with mineral N, the other nutrients were also supplied using mineral sources. No additional nutrients were supplied where organic fertilization was... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate nitrogen losses by NH3 volatilization and quantify the upward and downward NO3- flows in Latosol cultivated with arabica coffee. An experiment was set in 2010, in Viçosa-MG, Brazil (20º 41’ S and 42º 48’ W), in a randomized block design in a (3 x 2) + 1 factorial arrangement with three nitrogen doses (200, 400 and 600 kg ha-1), two forms of urea (conventional and NBPT urease inhibitor-treated) and one additional treatment without nitrogen fertilization, with four replicates. Semi-open type chambers were installed to quantify NH3 volatilization. To determine the concentration and flow of NO3- a soil solution extractor was installed in each plot at a 1-m depth together with three tensiometers at depths of... |

ABSTRACT ‘Pitombeira’ does not have organized cultivation, thus requiring information related to the production of seedlings, particularly in relation to chemical fertilizer. In this context, an experiment was conducted in order to define the best dose of nitrogen (N), using urea as N source, to be applied in ‘pitombeira’ seedlings. The experimental design was complete randomized blocks with four replicates and ten plants per plot, testing five N doses (0, 400, 800, 1.600 and 3.200 mg dm-3). Data were submitted to analysis of variance and regression. The non-destructive measurements (number of leaves, stem diameter, shoot length and the ratio between shoot length and stem diameter) were evaluated at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after transplanting (DAT). In... |

ABSTRACT Agricultural intensification to improve wheat yield has increased the demand for nitrogen fertilizers. This study aimed to investigate the wheat response in succession to soybean due to application of nitrogen rates and sources in top dressing, as well as to determine the N rates of maximum technical yield (MTY) and maximum economic yield (MEY). A field experiment was carried out in Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, on a clayey Typic Hapludox (Oxisol) under a continuous no-till. A randomized block design was used, with 3 replications in a 4 × 3 complete factorial arrangement. The treatments consisted of a control and 3 N rates at 40; 80 and 120 kg∙ha−1 as calcium nitrate (CN), ammonium sulfate (AS), and urea (UR) in top dressing at tillering of... |

ABSTRACT High winter cereal yields depend on an adequate supply of nitrogen (N). We developed a system for indicating N rates for wheat and barley in the South-Central region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, using results of 72 field experiments conducted from 2007 to 2012. The N rates recommended for winter cereals were estimated to supply the amounts of N fertilizer needed to obtain increasing yields (<3.5, 3.5-4.5, 4.5-5.5, and >5.5 Mg ha-1) of crops grown after soybean and corn on soils with a variable organic matter content (<40, 40-60, and >60 g dm-3). The apparent mineralization rate of soil N was estimated to be 1 % and the N fertilization efficiency 50 %. The N rates recommended for wheat ranged from 30 to 150 kg ha-1 when cultivated... |

ABSTRACT Ammonia volatilization (N-NH3) is one of the main pathways of Nitrogen loss reducing nitrogen use efficiency in coffee orchard. This work aimed at quantifying ammonia volatilization (N-NH3) losses from N-sources to be used in coffee plantations fertilization in Brazil. The experiment was conducted in the field on a dystrophic red latosol (Ferralsol in FAO's classification) at the Coffee Research Sector, University of Lavras, MG, Brazil. The experimental design was of complete randomized blocks with three repetitions of the following treatments: conventional urea, ammonium nitrate and urea + 0.15% Cu and 0.4% B, urea + anionic polymers, urea + elementary sulfur (S0) + polymers, and urea + plastic resin. These N sources were split into three doses... |

ABSTRACT Intercropping corn and palisade grass is a technique to increase straw production, soil C contents, nutrient cycling and crop yield. However, concerns arise from nitrogen (N) uptake by the intercropping crop causing reduction in the yield of the corn. Our objective was to evaluate N recovery efficiency (NRE), and the N dynamics in the soil-plant system in corn intercropped with palisade grass. A field trial was carried out in Bahia, Brazil, evaluating two cropping systems: corn (monoculture) and corn intercropped with palisade grass sowed between rows on the same day as the corn crop, with four replicates in a completely randomized block design. Nitrogen (150 kg∙ha–1of 15N-urea) was applied at sowing to determine NRE, which means the amounts of... |

Four steers in individual paddocks with Marandu grass (B. Brizantha) in 4x4 square design were used to evaluate sunflower crushed supplementation in pasture-grazing animals on nitrogen balance and microbial protein synthesis. Supplements at 6 g kg-1 body weight comprised corn, soybean meal, and mineral and soybean meal substituted at proportions 0, 20, 40 and 60%. Diet contained averages 6.79, 6.96, 7.10 and 6.87% nitrogen respectively for substitution levels 0, 20, 40 and 60%. The inclusion of sunflower crushed (SC) increased nitrogen intake and fecal excretion of nitrogen while providing a positive balance. Animals’ plasma urea concentration supplemented with SC was 28.13% lower than that of supplemented animals without SC. SC inclusion did not change... |
